The Ritz Cinema was built in 1928 and
was originally called the Palace Theater. Through the years, movie-goers
have watched silent movies as well as famous classics such as
"Gone with the Wind".
In 1982 the Ritz closed for remodeling and the last movie shown starred Steve Martin in "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid". Sadly, nobody knew that it would be nearly 25 years before a movie would be shown again at the Ritz. On January 25, 2006, new owner, Bill Alger began a year long task of renovating the historic theater. With the help of family and friends, new seats, carpet, a projector, concessions and many other updates were made. On January 27, 2007 the Grand Re-opening took place with boxer, Rocky Balboa gracing the new screen with his own comeback.
The Ritz Cinema has old-fashioned charm with murals on the cinema walls feature past actors such as Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne and Clark Gable to name a few. The theater also had modern day appeal with bright colors in the concession, comfortable seats with extra leg room, and surround sound.
Come visit the Ritz Cinema in downtown Rensselaer, park on the beautiful brick street and enjoy a piece of town's history.
